Since it is located in Atlanta, the Georgia Aquarium is frequently referenced to as the “Atlanta Aquarium.” With over 8,000,000 gallons of water and more aquatic life than any other aquarium, the Georgia Aquarium is touted as the largest aquarium in the world.
Hosting millions of visitors each year, this amazing aquarium in Atlanta has become the most popular tourist attraction in the state and one of the most famous in the world. With thousands of animals housed in a building that spans over 580,000 square feet, the marine life exhibited is unique, beautiful, and breathtaking to anyone who visits.
There are over 12,000 square feet of viewing windows spread amongst the 60 different exhibits which makes watching and experiencing the aquarium an enjoyable and memorable experience.
The aquarium is composed of 5 “galleries” or habitats, with each containing different species andaquatic life unique to their exhibit:
- Ocean Voyager – Experience the largest single man-made habitat in the world that is in over 6,000,000 gallons of water that contains thousands of different animals. You will be captivated when you view one of the largest viewing windows in the world and take a trip down a 100′ long tunnel that surrounds you with marine life. It is in the Ocean Voyager gallery that you will find the home of four whale sharks captive in the only aquarium outside of Asia.
- Cold Water Quest – Discover the animals and marine life that live in cold ocean waters including sea dragons, the giant pacific octopus, African penguins, and even sea lions!
- Tropical Diver – Relax as you view the largest living coral reef in the United States. Watch the elegant movements of jellyfish and eels, along with thousands of other underwater creatures.
- River Scout – From piranhas to otters, enjoy a fresh water exhibit that features electric fishes and much, much more!
- Georgia Explorer – Learn about the waters and species that live just off the coast of Georgia in this interactive and educational (as well as fun) exhibit that highlights some of Georgia’s famous fish and sea turtles!
