America’s favorite southern city used to be quite a mouthful to pronounce. Originally called “Marthasville”, this Georgian city adopted a new name to accommodate the limited space on train schedules. As “Atlanta”, train conductors’ paperwork became much less cluttered and even the city’s current nickname works much better (“Hotlanta” rolls off the tongue a lot easier than “Hot-arthasville”).
