RUNNING AROUND ATLANTA

ATLANTA, HOME OF THE PEACHTREE ROAD RACE, IS A CITY ON THE RUN
Atlanta's year-round mild climate (with some notable exceptions and surprises) allows runners to practice and compete during all four seasons and hundreds of thousands take advantage of it. It's almost impossible to drive anywhere without seeing a runner or biker and at almost any time of day.
Many top runners, such as Olympian Jeff Galloway, make Atlanta their headquarters and are great influences on the average athletes.
Galloway was one of the main founders of the world's top 10K road race, the annual Peachtree Road Race.

  THE PEACHTREE ROAD RACE
The Peachtree is the world's largest 10K road race and arguably the best and most famous.
On the 4th of July, 55,000 runners and more than 150,000 spectators will clog Atlanta's most famous street in the 36th running of the Peachtree Road Race. The field is so large that the winner will have crossed the finish line a full hour before the final runner begins his 6.2 mile run.
The race draws world class runners, competitive athletes from all over and local joggers and even some who walk most of the course, but that is the beauty of the event that also spawned a huge fitness craze that still hasn't stopped growing in Atlanta.
Besides this major event, there are hundreds of smaller road races, including a Peachtree for kids.

The Peachtree draws much attention to Atlanta as a city of runners but it is but one race among many and not all are 10K or simply running.
The area draws top competitors in the triathlon and marathon, as well.  Here are a couple.

   ATLANTA MARATHON
This year, the 26.1 mile race will be on Thanksgiving Day, starting at 7:30 a.m. The Half-Marathon begins at 7 a.m.
The marathon starts just outside Turner Stadium, the half-marathon at Peachtree Road and Clairmont Road.
In either case, runners new to Atlanta discover that the area has a lot of hills. Some aren't apparent on the MARTA ride downtown or to Chamblee (half-marathon), especially the long, seemingly gentle slopes seen out a window. Running them is another matter, but the challenge makes finishing even more valuable to a runner's memory.
