Atlanta will be the place to be this April as the city will once again play host to a variety of sports, concerts, theater and comedy events. With so many things to do in Atlanta it’s always important to plan ahead as many of these events can be sold out and tickets difficult to obtain. So if you will be in the ATL area in April we have provided you with a handy guide to what’s hot in A-town broken down by genre.
Tops on the list for many this April will be sports as the Atlanta Braves will open up the 2012 MLB season. Although the Braves will open up the season on the road, the home opener will be held at Turner Field on April 13th against the Milwaukee Brewers. During the month of April the Braves will also host the New York Mets (April 16-18) and Pittsburgh Pirates (April 27-30). The Atlanta Hawks will also be putting on the finishing touches on another successful season. The Hawks are currently on pace for a #6 seed in the NBA Playoffs and will face the Charlotte Bobcats (April 4), Detroit Pistons (April 6 & 18), Toronto Raptors (April 15), Boston Celtics (April 20), New York Knicks (April 22), LA Clippers (April 24), and Dallas Mavericks (April 26). However, the biggest sports event of the month will be the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC 145) on April 21 at Phillips Arena. UFC 145 will feature the much anticipated light heavyweight championship bout between Jon Jones and Rashad Evans. Additional fights include Rory MacDonald vs Che Mills, Brendan Schaub vs Ben Rothwell, Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin, and Mark Bocek vs Matt Wiman. Although not in Atlanta, the 2012 Masters Golf Tournament will also take place in nearby Augusta from April 2th through April 8th.
On the concert front, many headlining acts including Snow Patrol (April 2nd - Tabernacle), Noel Gallagher (April 6 - Tabernacle), Josh Turner (April 14 - Cobb Energy PAC), Van Halen (April 19 - Philips Arena), Rammstein (April 23 Philips Arena), Beach Boys (April 28 – Chastain Park Amphitheatre), and Tom Petty (April 29 – Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park) will be coming to the Atlanta area. Other concerts of note include Pink Martini (4/1), Wale (4/1), The SiCK TOUR (4/4), Raekwon (4/4), Chaka Khan (4/4), Rednek (4/5), Martin Sexton (4/6), Hip Hop Gods Tour (4/7), Of Montreal (4/7), Go Radio (4/8), The Black Dahlia Murder with Nile – Skeletonwitch and Hour of Penance (4/13/), Larry Gatlin (4/14), Theory of a Deadman with Pop Evil (4/15), The Ting Tings (4/16), Mac Miller (4/17), Galactic (4/19), The Pretty Reckless (4/20), Tyrese (4/20), Leftover Salmon (4/20), Punch Brothers (4/21), Human Nature (4/21), Drive by Truckers (4/21), Say Anything (4/22), Trampled by Turtles (4/27), and Rodrigo y Gabriela (4/28). Also scheduled for April is the 43rd Annual GMA Dove Awards that will feature the best of Christian and Gospel Music. The event will be held on April 19th at the Fox Theater.
On the Theater front, Young Frankenstein will be playing on April 1 at the Cobb Energy Perferming Arts Center and Tyler Perry’s Madea Gets a Job (April – 15) and Les Miserables (April 24-29) will be performed at the Fox theater. There will also be a very special performance of the the Moscow Festival Ballet
There will be no shortage of laughter coming from Atlanta in April as many top comedian will be performing in the ATL. One of the more interesting is the All Star Comedy Show : Atlanta vs Detroit at Center Stage on April 20. The event will feature comedians from Atlanta (Lav Luv, Vanessa Fraction, and Ronnie Jordan) facing off against Detroit (Howie Bell, Hadiyah, and Mike Bonner). Other comics coming to town include Kevin James (4/11) at the Cobb Energy PAC and Joe Rogan (4/20) at Tabernacle.
