When it comes to big Broadway productions,
Atlanta isn’t usually known to be the first place you think of to indulge in a
feast of the arts. However thanks to the Fox Theatre, the Big Apple’s Broadway
scene comes to us courtesy of the annual Broadway Atlanta performance season.
With fall rapidly approaching, the 2012-2013 performance schedule has just been
released. So, mark your calendars for what is sure to be a fascinating line-up.
Fifth Third Bank Broadway in Atlanta is all set
to bring five of the most buzzed about and beloved Broadway hits to Atlanta’s
Fox Theatre beginning this September. This is a prime opportunity to see the
shows you’ve heard about right in your own backyard. The five shows making
stops at the Fox are: War Horse, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, Flashdance, Million Dollar Quartet and Sister
Act. Each production features a talented cast of stars, numerous accolades
and well-deserved awards.
War Horse September 25-30, 2012
A National Theatre of Great Britain production and a winner
of five 2011 Tony Awards including Best Play, War Horse is the powerful story of a beloved horse named Joey that
is taken from his young owner Albert and enlisted to fight for the English in
World War I. Once a prisoner of enemy crossfire, Joey is separated from Albert
much longer than expected, causing his owner to go on a treacherous mission to
find his horse and bring him home.
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast November 27 – December 2, 2012
The beloved Disney classic for all ages gets an even more
song and dance-filled upgrade courtesy of the Broadway production. Following an
impressive sold-out run last year, this family-friendly tale of true love and
acceptance is back in Atlanta to hopefully once again break box office
attendance records. The story of Princess Belle and a cursed prince turned into
the Beast is well-known, but the performance spectacle shouldn’t be missed!
Flashdance February 19-24, 2013
One of the most popular films of the 80’s is gloriously
turned into the musical it was practically destined to be. If you need a little
refresher about the 1983 blockbuster hit, it follows Alex, a welder by day,
exotic dancer by night, who longs to be accepted to a prestigious ballet school
despite her lack of formal training. Add romantic interest Nicky and friends
from the club she dances at and you have a wild ride all set to infectious
tunes from the film in addition to 16 new songs.
Million Dollar Quartet March 12-17, 2013
This Tony Award-winning musical is set to premiere in
Atlanta next spring to great fanfare and anticipation. It tells the incredible
true story of what happened when four of rock ‘n’ roll’s most beloved icons
came together at Sun Records studios for the greatest jam session ever. The
icons include Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Million Dollar Quartet brings that
magical night in music history to life through a tale of broken promises, betrayal,
secrets and celebrations.
Sister Act April 30 – May 5, 2013
Yet another Hollywood blockbuster has transformed for the
Broadway stage, and this time its Whoopi Goldberg’s 1992 hit Sister Act. The musical is based on lounge singer Delores Van Cartier and her experiences
at the convent she is placed in after witnessing a mob hit. A lover of Motown
hits and classic standards, Delores turns the convent’s choir upside down with
her soulful choice of music. If you loved the original film, it’s practically
guaranteed that you’ll adore the musical version as well.
