Douglas County

Gentle, rolling hills... family-oriented, hometown atmosphere... excellent schools and health care... all this and more awaits you in Douglas County. Located just 17 miles west of downtown Atlanta, Douglas County has the perfect blend of small town charm and big city allure.

In fact, Douglas County is one of the most conveniently located areas of metro Atlanta. The major artery into the county is Interstate 20, which provides a direct link to the heart of Atlanta's business community. In addition, Camp Creek Parkway provides access to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, the busiest airport in the world. With the benefit of approximately 1,843 flights per day, passengers are within two hours of 80 percent of cities in the nation. Nearby, Fulton County Airport/Brown Field offers full service for corporate and private aircraft. Rail services, provided by Norfolk Southern Corporation, move finished goods and raw materials into and out of the county.

For businesses, this accessibility spells success. Fortune 500 companies, international corporations and locally-owned businesses all find a home in Douglas County. MCI recently opened a major facility in the area, and LMC Satcom has an international teleport satellite operation located here. A workforce of 46,000 strong is a compelling reason for businesses to consider Douglas County.

For residents, this accessibility spells fun. Douglas County, which many refer to as the "Western Gateway to Atlanta," provides its residents with all the thrills of metro Atlanta. You are minutes from the melodious sounds of the Atlanta Symphony, the shopping sprees on Peachtree Street, or the food and fun at the Hard Rock Cafe. Yet the peaceful waters of Sweetwater Creek State Park are right around the corner in Douglas County. The manicured lawns of championship golf courses are minutes away.

Over 83,000 residents call Douglas County home. Between 1990 and 1995, Douglas County's population saw an increase of 16 percent, representing a substantial yet manageable growth. Even more impressive is the fact that American Demographics magazine ranked Douglas County as the 45th fastest growing county in the nation.

Yet the growth has not destroyed the small town atmosphere that people associate with Douglas County. The cities of Douglasville and Lithia Springs maintain a strong sense of community through a variety of activities.

Six public parks are run by the Douglas County and Douglasville Parks and Recreation departments, providing league play for youths and adults.

Sweetwater Creek State Park, Georgia's third most visited park, has nearly 2,000 acres of forest with a 215 acre lake and a wild river valley. Water sports, from fishing to canoeing, are popular, as well as hiking and picnicking. A proposed interpretive museum located in the park will contain exhibits about Native American and Civil War history. Room for educational projects will also be allocated.

If you love golf, then you will find courses in Douglasville that challenge the beginner as well as the more advanced player. Tennis is also a popular sport in Douglas County. The Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA) organizes league play at all levels throughout the Atlanta and Douglas County area and is 75,000 members strong.

If you consider shopping a form of exercise, you will be pleased with your choices. While Douglas County is already home to local shopping centers, a major mall is currently under construction. Arbor Place Mall will be the sixth largest in metro Atlanta, with 1.1 million square feet of department store anchors, specialty shops, restaurants and movie theaters.

Dining establishments of all types are springing up all over the county, with choices ranging from home-cooked barbeque to the finest cuisine.

The housing market in Douglas County plays a major role in the quality of life. A variety of housing choices are available, from apartments and duplexes to new home subdivisions and luxury golf communities. Wooded lots, lots with acreage, lots on the golf course. . . it's your choice. And, average home price is far less than comparable homes in most areas of metro Atlanta. Swim and tennis communities, condominium complexes and cluster homes are all available and affordable. Many families choose to live in Douglas County and commute the short distance to work in Atlanta.

Delicious drinking water is something most take for granted. But in Douglas County, clean water and wastewater treatment is a priority. Countless hours of hard work and planning by the award-winning Douglasville-Douglas County Water & Sewer Authority (WSA) provide for the crystal clean water supply and environmentally sound waste water treatment which residents enjoy on a daily basis.

Matching the quality of water-related services in Douglas County is its superior educational system. Voters have approved two bond issues recently for renovation and expansion of the Douglas County School System to accommodate the growth of the county and provide the latest technological advances.

For those in pursuit of higher education, the opening of the state-of-the-art Douglas County Satellite Campus of Carroll Tech this year provides a wide array of higher education opportunities.

The satellite campus will also provide the community with a 7,200 square foot conference center with the capacity to serve up to 625 people in an auditorium or 450 for a meal. It will also provide a viable option for business, educational and governmental groups to conduct meetings, seminars and conferences without having to travel.

Mercer University also has a satellite campus in Douglas County, providing students with even more career options.

Well respected health care facilities, Promina Douglas Hospital and Parkway Medical Center, serve the county, as well as the specialized Inner Harbour Hospital, which offers psychiatric care.
