Travel up GA-400 and you will discover Roswell and Alpharetta, an extremely high-growth area offering a family-oriented, upper-scale environment.
Roswell, the sixth largest city in Georgia, has been consistently named by national pollsters as one of the best places in the country to live. Its historic past has been preserved and is celebrated in an annual festival. Self-guided tours through the historic mansions and churches of the Civil War era are quite popular. Bulloch Hall, the birth home of Theodore Roosevelt's mother Mittie, is another popular attraction. Roswell's award-winning parks and recreation department operates extensive youth and adult athletic leagues. Parks, playgrounds and tennis courts can be found throughout the city. There are also several exclusive, private golf and country club communities in Roswell that offer the best in golf and tennis. Numerous swim/tennis neighborhoods as well as many historic homes give residents a number of housing options. Mountain Park, a small nature preserve just outside of Roswell, is also part of North Fulton. Its secluded atmosphere appeals to those who enjoy a small-town pace.
Just north of Roswell is the city of Alpharetta, where a small town atmosphere meets big city growth. This area was once known as a sleepy country town where horse farms dotted the landscape and the Alpha Drug Store's soda shop was the place to be. In less than a decade, Alpharetta has exploded into one of the most desirable addresses in Atlanta. Everywhere you turn there is a new swim/tennis community, an exclusive gated neighborhood or a private golf and country club community. Mixed-use developments that combine high-end residential and commercial properties are very successful here, especially Windward, located just minutes from downtown Alpharetta. North Point Mall opened less than five years ago, creating one of the largest retail areas in Atlanta. Roads through town have been expanded to accommodate the growth, and new schools open each year. Yet Main Street remains very much the same. City Hall, First Baptist, First Methodist, Alpha Drugs & Dockery's Soda Shoppe all still bring a cohesive, hometown feel to the community.
