2013-14 Atlanta Falcons Preview

The 2013 Atlanta Falcons are primed for another great year as they'll once again be one of the top Super Bowl contenders in the NFC. The Falcons offense is led by the talented QB Matt Ryan and his wide receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones and perennial All-Pro tight end Tony Gonzalez. However, their defense is still a major question mark as the Falcons will be relying on a bunch of young and unproven players. Despite the lofty expectations, head coach Mike Smith is quick to point out to his team that they still have a long way to go and there is a much work to be done. With that in mind, Let's take a closer look how the offense and defensive should fair this season. Offense: With Ryan at the helm, the Falcons should once again be one of the league's highest scoring teams.

Ryan and offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter seem to be on the same page - especially after he took the kid gloves off and let Ryan throw the ball down-field to his talented corps of receivers. The offense works well with Roddy White and Julio Jones on the outside and Tony Gonzalez at tight end. This trio is arguably the best of the best in the league. The Falcons expect Julio Jones to take a huge step forward this season and become one of the games elite WRs. For the running game, Steven Jackson has been added and should be able to keep defenses off guard.

The Falcons will now be able to utilize a lot more play action, in addition to opening up screen passes. The only question mark on offense is how the rebuilt offensive line will hold up. With Peter Konz moving to the inside, the O-line will consist of 3 new starters including Lamar Holmes. Defense: Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan is one of the best defensive minds in the NFL. Even though the Falcons Defense was not particularly good last season, he made a lot of strides with the team last year. One of the biggest deficiencies in the Falcons defense is the inability to get to the QB without a great outside pass rusher. Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan will need to work his magic again in 2013 and figure out a way to pressure the opposing QB with stunts and blitz packages. Defensive players to take note of include newcomers Jonathan Massaquoi and Stansly Maponga. L inebacker Sean Weatherspoon is the clear leader of the defensive unit and is expected to do great things this again this season.

The Falcons have earned their way into the playoffs in four of the last five seasons under Smith. With a loaded roster, this season should be no different. The offense will should once again be firing on all cylinders but the big question is can the defense be good enough to win in the playoffs. If the Falcons hope to make the Super Bowl they will need to find a consistent pass rusher. If all of these stars align and Mike Nolan can continue to improve the 'D', it is very likely that the Falcons will be in the hunt for Super Bowl once again.
