Hugh Acheson Named Best Chef

There are few things Hugh Acheson has not accomplished in his life. Born and raised in Ottawa, Canada, the talented chef spent the majority of his teenage years in a restaurant kitchen. It was here he discovered that academics were not his forte and that his desires lived and breathed within that kitchen. His resume is full of impressive material. He began working with Chef Rob MacDonald at the renowned Henri Burger restaurant in Ottawa, and then journeyed to San Francisco to work as the chef de cuisine with Chef Mike Fennelly at Mecca, and later functioned as opening sous chef with famed Chef Gary Danko at his namesake restaurant.

In March of 2000, he opened the critically acclaimed Athens, GA restaurant Five & Ten , where it still sits today. In 2007, Acheson opened The National with fellow chef Peter Dale . Hugh opened Atlanta based restaurant, Empire State South in the summer of 2010. One of his most recent achievements is his win of Best Chef for The Munchies. "The Munchies, People's Choice Food Awards recognize the most amazing tastes, faces and places in the food world." TV personality and popular chef Andrew Zimmern and a panel of culinary celebrities choose nominees.

It is truly an honor just to nominated, let alone be crowned the winner. Hugh has also competed in many seasons of popular television show, Top Chef America . Not only is Hugh a celebrated chef, but he is also a published author. His cookbook, titled A New Turn in the South : Southern Flavors Reinvented for Your Kitchen , hit the bookshelves on October 18th, 2011 and in 2012won the Jeames Beard Foundation award for Best Cookbook in the field of "American Cooking."

This book has earned him a great deal of recognition, including Food & Wine's Best New Chef (2002), the Atlanta Journal Constitution Restaurant of the Year (2007), a six time James Beard nominee for Best Chef Southeast (2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012) and winner of the award in 2012. He is also a 2007 Rising Star from and won their Mentor Award in 2012. Hugh is not done leaving his mark on the culinary world.
