Restaurant Spotlight Hammocks Trading Company

The sound of Southern-friendly seafood applied with an elevated, yet simultaneously laid back twist, is easily something to get excited about and that's exactly what Hammocks Trading Company aims to do, get you excited about their food. Opting to set up shop in the suburbs of Sandy Springs rather the city of Atlanta, this virtual newbie to the culinary landscape of the city aims provide familiar seafood fare that is upscale in not only presentation, but also execution. Only time will tell if Atlanta's southern hospitality will trickle down and bless this restaurant with a long shelf life, but based on the menu, their prospects look pretty good.

When you first approach Hammocks Trading Company, you're greeted warmly by the vibrant red door, cool light blue paint job surrounding the building and a colorful cluster of umbrellas lining the patio that can be seen from the front entrance. All of these elements combined together give off a beachy feel that is a nice addition to the city's restaurant scene. Once inside, there are white walls and ceilings with hammocks perched to them, playing off the name of the establishment of course.

Bleached blonde wooden tables and low-back white chairs finish off the decor nicely. The whole of the interior has an open feeling, unlike the stuffy and cluttered element to many restaurants. Chef William Sigley gets the credit for creating menus for lunch and dinner that are both rich in the history of traditional seafood, while also offering diners a chance to expand their palate to something deliciously greater. Some of the highlights of the lunch menu include: Chicken Liver Plate (capers, red onion, boiled egg, herb croutons), Steamed Pei Mussels (white wine, garlic, herb butter, grilled bread), Fried Oyster Sandwich and Beer-Battered Fish Tacos.

Dinner offerings include more traditional seafood dishes along with a few surprises like: Cornmeal Fried Catfish (wilted greens, stewed lentils, celery salad), Smoked Brisket (turnpike white cheddar grits, rapini, gremolata), Oysters on the Half Shell, Smoked Salmon (pumpernickel, lemon-creme fraiche, horseradish beets) and Sea Scallops served with butternut squash risotto, black truffle and apple cider.
