Restaurant Spotlight Mi Cocina

Currently, the winter season is blessing the city of Atlanta with frigid temps and somewhat icy roads, which usually calls for a heavy meal of down-home southern cooking to stick to your ribs and warm you up on cold winter nights. Surprisingly, the type of food that many Atlanta residents seem to be craving during these doldrums of winter appears to be of the Tex-Mex variety. That's right; a recent drive by of Midtown's Mi Cocina saw a pretty substantial crowd for a weekday and for Tex-Mex restaurant. If the crowds are this heavy during the cold months of the year, Mi Cocina is in for an even more massive gathering when the Atlanta mercury begins to rise. Located in the highly desirable 12 th & Midtown development, Mi Cocina already has one of the most important things going for it: prime location.

Once inside, diners are greeted with a visual feast of modern design, sleek fixtures and a vibrant color palate that echoes the produce found in many of the featured dishes. Festive and flirty would probably be the two best ways to describe this Tex-Mex hotspot which has both an upper and lower level. The menu contains many dishes that you've come to expect from a Tex-Mex restaurant, but there are also some unfamiliar gems here that deserve a try as well.

Some of the menu highlights include: the Cocina Platter (flautitas, quesadillas and beef/bean nachos), Cocina Changa (two flour tortillas with picadillo beef/chicken, queso blanco, guacamole, arroz and refritos), Sunset Enchiladas, Tamale Dinner, Tilapia Vercruz, Shrimp Brochette (bacon-wrapped shrimp stuffed with jack cheese and jalapeno, served with bean soup, arroz and guacamole) and the select Fajitas (chicken, beef, rib-eye, Latin stir-fry and 50/50). They also have a gluten-free menu that contains many of the items on the regular menu, as well as an extensive list of signature cocktails that accompany any meal quite nicely. Mi Cocina is located at 1080 Peachtree Street, Atlanta, 404-802-8801. Operating hours are: 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays; 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays.
